BerlaMUN

What is a MUN?

A MUN or Model United Nations conference is a simulation of the United Nations. In this simulation students debate current topics in different committees. They do this while representing a country and thus have to follow the policy of this country. The special thing about MUN’s is that they are organised by students, for students. Besides debate, MUN’s consist of loads of fun, new friends, cookie breaks, gossip boxes and much more.

About the Berlage lyceum

The Berlage Lyceum is located in the beautiful area ‘de Pijp' (the Pipe) in the south of Amsterdam, with its old, particular style from architect Hendrik Petrus Berlage. It was built in a worker's neighborhood, and the architecture reflects that. If you look around carefully, you might just find a chimney in the shape of a shovel. The school was built in the 1920's, and has been a school since 1962. Because it's already quite old, it's currently being renovated to provide an even better learning environment. However, nothing will change on the outside of the building, because the school is a part of the UNESCO world heritage,

which means it is considered an official monument.

What makes our school so special, is that we are a school that is very involved with our world. The school believes in peace, human rights, global citizenship and much more! That is why we are considered a UNESCO school. At our school we have gathered a group of dedicated students who are committed to advancing the goals and objectives of UNESCO, called the UNESCO work group. They work together to develop strategies and implement projects that support global causes, for example with the use of posters and campaigns.

Aside from UNESCO, our school also has several (partially) student-led organizations, the MUN-group being one of them. This allows the students to learn life skills and work for causes they are passionate about. Other aspects also make this school very unique: the first 3 years all subjects, except a selected few, are taught in English for all educational levels which our school provides. Apart from that, Berlage Lyceum provides the subject "global citizenship", which is not taught at many schools, other than ours. This subject gives the students a much wider perception of the world that we live in and shows them the importance of their roles in society on this earth. Other than that, we of course participate

in the most fun and educational event: MUN!

Although the school isn't considered an international school, we do have a variety of students with backgrounds from different cultures and countries, which results in everyone learning a lot from each other. The Berlage Lyceum is a historic monument and a place of connection. It is truly a world-school.

We are excited to welcome you, and look forward to your visit!
