International Baccalaureate English
Berlage Lyceum offers motivated students an extra challenge with its bilingual (TTO) programmes. In the upper years of the VWO, that extra challenge is provided by an English certificate with a difference: International Baccalaureate (IB) English A: Language and Literature.
Firstly, the basics. IB English A: Language and Literature is a native-level pre-university English certificate. In the course of their studies, our students learn to think clearly and critically and to express their ideas persuasively in both writing and speech. They also read a range of the best writers of the past 2000 years. Think Beowulf, Chaucer, Shakespeare, Henrik Ibsen, Wilfred Owen, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and more.
Next, the ideals. The International Baccalaureate (IB) is an international education foundation that aims to produce engaged and international-minded citizens of the world. During English lessons in the fourth, fifth and sixth years, we strive to honor the needs of the ideal student outlined in the IB’s learner profile: one who is an inquirer, a thinker, a communicator, a risk-taker, while being knowledgeable, principled, balanced and reflective. It is a long way from ‘zesjescultuur’.
If you want to get the very best out of yourself and develop a lifelong commitment to the planet and its peoples, IB English at Berlage is for you.
